From the beginning, it was clear that “Scrubby” should be designed like a children’s book in film form. One of the biggest challenges was to avoid a “computer-generated” look to maintain the illusion of a handmade style. After numerous tests, I decided to model the characters solely in 3D. To achieve a softer and more natural appearance, we replaced the fur of the characters with point clouds. The backgrounds were digitally hand-painted to authentically replicate the visual aesthetics of a painted children’s book.
